BSCs Back. ALL RIGHT!!!!!

The Baby Sitters Club is BACK!!!!  This makes me happier than you could possibly know!  A few years ago they returned in the form of a few graphic novels that has since grown to 7 with an 8th on the way.  Now there are even graphic novels featuring one of my personal favorites, Karen!  But with the return of the new Netflix series, they have released the original series again! SQUEEEE!!!!

I think we are on our 3rd or 4th time going through the Netflix series.  My girls are HOOKED, and I am LOVING it!  It's definitely a little different than the original, but I think it's even better.  The casting is fantastic.  I mean, Alicia Silverstone plays Kristy's mom!  It's Cher!  Side note, I swear that woman does not age!  The characters and stories have been updated to reflect current times and there is a lot more diversity among characters.  Claudia and Stacey do a full on Queer Eye style makeover of Mary Anne's room!  They take advantage of social media to promote the club.  Mary Anne is biracial.  Dawn is Latinx.  The Johannsens are a same sex couple.  One of the baby sitting charges is transgender.  Kids have the opportunity to see real people that are not often portrayed in the media.  Even better, some can finally see someone who looks like them.  The club members themselves are strong, self aware, empowered females.  This is a show that I am happy to have my girls watch, besides for obvious nostalgia purposes.

My 3rd grader has been consuming the graphic novels and is now reading the books themselves.  It was a bit of a full circle moment when I realized my 8 year old is currently reading a book that I also read at age 8!  Natalie identifies as a Claudia/Stacey hybrid, while Julianna identifies on a deep spiritual level with Karen, but displays some hardcore Kristy tendencies.  I myself am probably a blend of Kristy and Dawn, but I always wanted to be Claudia.  Now the books are the originals.  I look forward to not only how they notice similarities and differences between the book and the show, but also notice differences between then and now.  It definitely presents me with a great opportunity to have conversations with them about what life was like when I was their age.  Such a cool mother/daughter bonding opportunity seeing as though they aren't quite ready to be introduced to Gilmore Girls yet.  Oh but when that day comes, this Lorelai will be THRILLED!!!!!

This librarian suggests that you read all of these books immediately if not sooner!  Plus I would love to hear your thoughts.  Did you watch the series?  Did you like/dislike it?  What are your favorite BSC books?

You also have to check out the Baby Sitter's Club prequel, The Summer Before that was released in 2010.  It sets the stage for what came next!
Pull some Twizzlers out from the inside of a hallowed out book, and share away!  I'll be the one in the directors chair with a visor!  In the meantime, here are some links to articles about the rebooted, updated series, some fun facts, and even a quiz where you can find out which member of the BSC you would be!
