Very often it's the authors who get all the accolades when it comes to children's books, but we shouldn't forget about the illustrators who give the words of a book meaning through imagery. You might have heard about the Newbery Medal and may have even been assigned some winners to read during your elementary school years. Today I want to focus on the Caldecott Medal. It is an award that was created after the Newbery Medal to honor the illustrators who were creating picture books. I am linking some information about this award as well as a list of the winners and honors. These books feature some of the finest illustrations in children's literature and some of my personal favorites.
Caldecott Medal Winners and Honors
So when I share these illustrators, I do so in no particular order. It's hard to pick an overall favorite because illustrations can vary drastically in terms of creation, medium, and style. These are illustrators who have created beautiful works of art in books that I love and enjoy. Maybe you already know illustrators such as Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, Lois Ehlert, Ezra Jack Keats, Leo Lionni, Richard Scarry, Simms Taback, and Maurice Sendak who have illustrated some of the most well known children's classics, many of which have won awards. Then there are big names in kid world like Mo Willems, Kevin Henkes, and Denise Fleming. Some you may not know until you hear the name of the book such as Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. Ask your local librarian to help you find books illustrated by these amazingly talented artists. Below I am going to highlight some of my favorites that you might not know about but absolutely should. So here I go!
